Frequently Asked Questions

Open a question for details.

Who is this training for?

Adults seeking a practical less-than-lethal personal defense option, including students, professionals, and community members interested in personal safety.

Do I need to bring pepper spray?

No. You do not need to bring a personal spray device. Only inert practice canisters are used during the introductory session. No live pepper spray is used.

Are there any prerequisites?

No prior experience or training is required.

How long is the course?

The introductory Pepper Spray Training course is two hours and includes hands-on practice.

Why pepper spray instead of wasp spray?

Use products as intended. Wasp spray is an insecticide, not a personal-defense product. Choose a pepper spray labeled for personal defense, and follow its instructions.

What are the different spray patterns?

Delivery pattern affects coverage, aiming, and the chance of spray drifting onto the user or others.

Stream, gel, and fog/mist illustrations with person, dog, and bear silhouettes
Illustrative patterns only. Dog-deterrent spray patterns vary by product; the silhouettes do not assign a spray pattern to a species. Choose products labeled for their intended use.

  • Stream: A focused liquid spray that requires controlled aiming. It generally reduces wind blowback compared with a fine mist.
  • Gel: A thicker, sticky formulation delivered in a targeted stream. It creates less airborne dispersion, but direct contact and accurate aiming still matter.
  • Fog / mist: A wider cloud of fine droplets. It covers more area, but wind and airborne spread can also expose the user or bystanders.
  • Foam: A foaming formulation that coats the surface it contacts. Its reach and application depend on the specific product.

Check your device: Range varies by model. Follow its label and instructions rather than assuming one distance or a universally best pattern. Reduced blowback does not mean zero exposure risk. Animal deterrents should be selected by their labeled purpose, not spray pattern alone.

AFT partner: F3 Defense. AFT instructor David Arnold has received training from F3 Defense and is authorized to sell its products. AFT training focuses on personal pepper spray use. Visit F3 Defense to explore its broader product offerings.
